Salem

Salem got its name from the word ‘Seralam’ which is the place where the chera king was rested when he came for maarriage of paari's daughters. As this area is surrounded by hills, it is apt to be called Salem. It is a land of minerals. The hills around Salem have iron ore, bauxite, limestone, precious stones etc. Salem is the fifth largest city of Tamilnadu. This district was later divided into three: Dharmapuri, Namakkal and Salem. Salem is known as Sago Steel Mango City.

It is one of the major textile, Handloom Weaving, Lorry Body Buiding and Bauxite Mining center in the country. Shevaroys-Yercaud and Kollimalai hills are famous tourist places in Salem District.Panamarathupatty village is famous for purest Sago Manufacturing in India.
